Review: The Dark Knight is not a straightforward story of good and evil. Batman Well, yes, Joker is evil, yes. But Batman presents a more complex puzzle than usual: the citizens of Gotham City have fallen hai chai, called him a watchman and blamed him for the deaths of police and others. And more than the Joker villain. He is a Mephistopheles, whose actions are designed to create a moral dilemma for the enemy.
Heath Ledger as the Cinema's Original Performance Joker by Will he be the first posthumous Oscar winner after Peter Finch? His joker Nirvana classic "The Man Who Has" (120) draws strength from the character's original inspiration. The makeup of his clown is more opaque than ever, betraying his cackle deep wounds, he wanted revenge, he claimed, for the horrific punishment his father had inflicted on him at an early age. In a diabolical scheme near the end of the movie, he invites two ferry-burdened passengers to blow them up before blowing off another. Throughout the film, he created innovative situations that forced Batman (Christian Bell), Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harv Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to make impossible moral decisions. In the end the whole moral basis of the Batman legend is threatened.
Because these actors and others are so powerful and the movie does not allow its passionate special effects to elevate people, we were surprised at how deeply the drama affected us. Eckhart does a particularly good job as Harvey Dent, whose character is transformed into a bitter monster by a terrific fate. Maintaining a certain knowledge distance from action, it is common for a comic book movie to watch everything through a sophisticated screen. "The Dark Knight" trails around those defenses and engages us.
